The onset of winter is something we don't like to think about too much, but it will come and we need to be prepared. The challenges of winter driving are different from those we face in the summer and we all need to make sure our vehicles are prepared.
Here is some good advice for all driving conditions, but more especially for the onset of autumn and winter.
- Keep your lights clean, remove any mud or grime that builds up
- Keep a clean and smudge free windscreen to help you see clearly
- Check tyres regularly for tread and uneven wear
- Check your brakes, damp roads increase your stopping distance
- Cold mornings can impair battery performance, make sure it is charging properly
- Make sure you have the right anti-freeze mix, frost can come unexpectedly!
- Check your oil level regularly
- Run your air conditioning on occasions to make sure it does not sit idle for months
- Have an emergency kit in the boot, spare bulbs, warning triangle, torch, jump leads and warm jacket.
Most of all make sure your vehicle is regularly serviced and in good working order. The darker nights and colder weather take a higher toll on our cars. Be safe.
